Bangla
Nobo Borsho (Bengali New Year) Celebration
in Melbourne, 20 April 2008
The Bangladeshi community
celebrated the Bangla Nobo Borsho in Melbourne,
for the first time at the Federation Square,
the heart of Melbourne and the most prestigious
venue in the city. Shurolok organized
the event on 20 April. The vibrant Bangladeshi
students community studying at various
Universities in Melbourne joined Shurolok
in organizing this event. While Nobo Borsho
celebration in Australia is a regular
annual feature in the Bengali community,
what made this years’ celebration
distinct from the past endeavours was
the involvement of several countries and
ethnic groups which share common New Year
calendar coinciding with Boishakh, the
first month of the New Year. Artistes
from Thai, Indian, and Sri Lankan cultural
groups presented their traditional music
and dances. Other communities joined the
event to exchange greetings with the Bengali
community in Melbourne. Several indigenous
groups from Bangladesh staged a joint
colourful performance.
The spectacular opening
ceremony comprised flying traditional
kites by children accompanied by playing
of traditional instruments such as dhol,
khol, madol and khonjoni. Shurolok performed
inauguration songs “Esho Hey Boishakh”
and “Bishho Bina Robe”. The
students community, children from Bangla
language schools, members of recitation
club, drama groups and dance circles presented
shows throughout the day. Considering
the relative small Bengali population
in Melbourne, the turn out was extraordinary.
Some 4000 visitors visited Federation
Square to watch the celebration. They
included a significant number of Australians
who are considered “Bangladeshi
alumni”—in other words, Australians
who lived in Bangladesh in various capacities
in the past.
The festivity in Melbourne
on the day was inaugurated by the Victoria
Multicultural Minister James Merlino and
was supported by three major universities
(Monash, Deakin and Mlebourne), the Victorian
Multicultural Commission, and Dhaka Stock
Exchange. Channel I of Bangladesh was
the Media partner.
The 2009 program is planned
for 18th April 2009. Sponsors and donors
are welcome to contact us.
